The Stereo Mastering Dynamics Processor U796-M1 offers all important features of the U796-M2 version and includes the fast Peak Limiter, the versatile Compressor section and the combined DeCompressor, Pump-up Compressor, and Expander in a double-wide module.
The U796-M1 version is focussed on the important features for everyday use with any kind of program material and leaves out some additional features that add high cost to the M2 version in favor of an attractive price. It is therefore a very attractive alternative to the U796-M2, since it offers the same sound performance and can achieve the same loudness gain. The most important features, Crest, Envelope, Fill, Int, and Knee are installed. The DeCompressor/Pump-up Compressor/Expander section is identical and the limiter has either a ratio or an output gain control.
This page describes the differences between the M1 and M2 version in detail.
Limiter
While the M2 version offers output gain control and ratio control, the M1 has either a ratio control or an output gain control. You determine with the order which control you prefer. All the rest is the same in both versions.
Compressor
The Compressor section of the M1 comes without the Color controls that add distortion and the GR-Limit control that limits the gain reduction of the compressor. The Regulation Reverse switch is not exisiting; the M1 is always feedforward controlled. All the rest is the same in both versions.
DeCompressor, Expander, and Pump-Up Compressor
This sections is entirely identical in both versions.
Like the M2, the U796-M1 is a double wide module that fits in standard V700 frames. Inputs and outputs are balanced and can be implemented electronically balanced or transformer balanced. The transformer balanced version uses oversized torodial transformers, brand Haufe, Germany. The entire audio path is identical in both versions.
